Musculoskeletal disorders are now the most common cause of chronic incapacity. Back pain accounts for more than half of all musculoskeletal incapacity and is now increasing faster than any other cause.
Our Goal
Through a Functional Rehabilitation Programme we aim to enhance the levels of health and fitness and subsequently function, therefore significantly improve quality of life. Statistics for the course at Therapeutics indicate average improvements of; 59% improvement in pain levels, 72% improvement in disability levels and 57% improvement in self confidence.
Assessment
Prior to being accepted onto a Functional Rehabilitation Programme a thorough assessment is carried out by a Consultant (specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine), a Clinical Psychologist (accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist) and a Physiotherapist (musculoskeletal and rehabilitation specialist).
The Programme
Each programme is specifically tailored to the individual and incorporates:
- Education (anatomy, posture, biomechanics, manual handling, pain, pacing)
- Core stability training
- Physiotherapy based exercise sessions
- Gym based exercise sessions (cardiovascular and strengthening)
- Massage
- Functional activity training
- Relaxation and stress management techniques
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
As well as being assessed prior to starting the Functional Rehabilitation Programme, each person is assessed at the half way stage and on completion of the programme. There is also a follow up assessment carried out three months after the programme has been completed.
The programme is administered on a non-residential basis; courses are composed of full day sessions (7 hours) and/or half day sessions (3hours).
