Comic relief

Therapeutics did their bit to support this great charity with a cake bake/sale and with the help of patients and staff we raised £115. Thank you to everyone that got involved with baking and buying the cakes.

Pilates

Jane is planning to start another beginners pilates class on a Wednesday evening 7.30-8.30pm. Laura also has a couple of spaces available on her Thursday 6pm – 7pm beginners class. If you would be interested in joining either class call reception on 02380 653707.

London marathon

If you have been training for this years London Marathon on Sunday 21st April 2013 it is now only 4 weeks to go, most of your training should have been done and now might be the time to treat yourself and your aching muscles to a sports massage here in the clinic.

With the days getting longer and the sun shining (a bit) it is now time for our next newsletter with all the up to date news from Therapeutics. The clinic has been really busy even with the snow.

Pilates

There are still a couple of places remaining on the new beginners Pilates class that is starting on Thursday 28th February 2013 at 6pm. The class will be run by Laura one of our Physiotherapists here in the clinic. Give reception a call on 02380 653707 to register your interest or find out more details.

Acupuncture Awareness Week

Next week 25th February to 3rd March 2013 it is Acupuncture Awareness Week. Acupuncture is an ancient practice of medicine which has been used to restore, promote and maintain good health for thousands of years. Originating in the Far East, acupuncture balances the flow of energy around the body to restore and maintain harmony which encourages healing. We are very fortunate to have Penny Shires who is a member of the British Acupuncture Council having qualified with a degree in Acupuncture, working here at Therapeutics. Penny has been a registered nurse for more than twenty years and has a real desire to treat the root cause of health issues. To find out more about Acupuncture awareness week visit the website www. introducingacupuncture.co.uk
To find out more about Penny and what she can help with visit her website:
www.pennyshires.co.uk

Gait Analysis and Biomechanics

Did you know that at Therapeutics we also offer gait analysis and biomechanical assessment as well as all our other services.

Our gait analysis service, run by Kim Waters and the physiotherapy and podiatry team, uses the state of the art Vicon Motion Capture System to analyse the internal biomechanics during walking and running of patients and athletes with a range of problems. This enables us to manage injuries as well allowing us to assess and enhance performance.

Have a look at the website to find out lots more information and see if it could be of benefit to you.

And Finally….

There are planned road works on the M27 between junctions 4 & 5. It looks like the eastbound carriageway of the M27 will be closed completely for 3 days on March 9th, 10th and 11th (sat, sun and mon). A diversion will be put in place guiding traffic along Bassett Green Road and Stoneham Way, for traffic wishing to travel east from the M3. Those travelling east along the M27 will have to travel north up the M3, before following the diversion.
Southampton City Council are expecting the road works and diversion to cause a lot of problems for motorists the 3 day period. We will of course put an update on the website nearer the time.

With Christmas now behind us and 2013 definitely underway it is time for our first newsletter of the year.

Pilates

There are spaces available for experienced pilates clients in two of our classes on Tuesdays with Hazel at 7.30pm and Wednesdays with Jane at 6.15pm. These would be described as intermediate classes and if you are not sure if this is appropriate for you give us a call on 02380 653707 to discuss it further with the instructor.

Due to demand Laura will be starting a new beginners class on a Thursday evening 6-7pm starting in February. There are a couple of places still remaining so give us a call to register your interest.

Pre – ski MOT

Maybe we can help with our pre-ski MOT, which helps to reduce your risk of injury and maximise your potential on the slopes all provided by one of our physiotherapists. The package includes a full biomechanical assessment, identification of problem areas, a tailor made ski specific exercise program and short term gym membership if appropriate. Contact reception for further details.

New Year resolutions

If like most of us you have made new year resolutions to get more active, why not come and look at our gym.
Whether you are training for your first marathon or are an experienced athlete training for your next big event we can help. With the London marathon in April many of you will be starting to increase your training schedules and may benefit from sports massage to ease your aching muscles. The physio team are here to advise about niggles or injuries and our personal trainers can help if you need extra motivation or training schedules.

And finally….

Remember we offer a physiotherapy express appointment for injuries less than 6 weeks old. This is a 15 minute appointment and costs £15.

For Spike Milligan, golf was one way to spoil a nice walk. For the rest of us golf is a way for us to exercise, compete, to relieve lifes stresses,...

For Spike Milligan, golf was one way to spoil a nice walk. For the rest of us golf is a way for us to exercise, compete, to relieve lifes stresses, to socialise or to get out of the house. Some of us have been playing since a young age and some take it up later in life. Either way, it is important to be aware of the stresses and strains a golf swing has on your body and that a reasonable level of strength, fitness and flexibility is required if you want to be more serious about your game, prevent injury and not just hack your way around the course.

Our bodies work by using a pattern of alternating stable segments connected by mobile joints. If this pattern is altered, injuries may occur. When considering how this applies to golf, you could use the lumbar spine (low back) as an example. If the usually mobile hips and thoracic spine (upper back) become stiff then the usually stable lumbar spine becomes too mobile and pain can be the result. Unfortunately, a stiff thoracic spine and hips are two of the most common findings when assessing golfers (males in particular). This is quite likely the reason why lower back injuries are also so common in golf.

The two main swing characteristics (faults) that can lead to low back pain in golfers are the ‘S’ posture (too much curve of your lower back) and the reverse spine (bending sideways and backwards instead of rotating in your back swing). When assessed, golfers with these characteristics will have an alteration in the mobility: stability pattern.

The Titleist Performance Institute has performed extensive research on golfers of all levels and found the 12 most common swing characteristics that could be caused by an alteration in the fore mentioned pattern arc; S-Posture, C-Posture, Loss of posture, Flat shoulder plane, early extension, over-the-top, sway, slide, reverse spine angle, hanging back, casting/early release and chicken winging.

The best way to tackle these issues is by having a good team consisting of your golf pro and golf specialist physiotherapist that can work together to get the best out of your body and therefore your golf swing. Improve your accuracy, power and longevity in the game.
While low back pain is probably the most common issue associated with poor body swing mechanics, unfortunately other injuries are also frequent. For example; shoulder pain, knee pain, golfers and tennis elbow.

Golf Assessments are carried out by Rob Edmondson here in the clinic. have a look at Robs profile to find out more about what he does or contact us on 02380 653707 to book an assessment.

Stroke Survivors Southampton / Different Strokes Southampton Charity Sponsored Walk with Therapeutics Southampton Ltd

On Saturday 4th August, Stroke Survivors Southampton / Different Strokes Southampton (a local charity) and Therapeutics Southampton (a physiotherapy centre) hosted a sponsored charity walk. The event was in aid of the local charity.
Stroke Survivors Southampton is a group of ‘younger’ stroke survivors and carers, based in and around the Southampton area. The group was formed in late 2010, and is run by two individuals who are stroke survivors themselves.
The main aim of the group is to provide better support services for stroke survivors and carers, in and around the Southampton area.

The walk was attended by many people of varying abilities. Some suffering from illnesses, but all working together to achieve the common goal, which was to raise as much money for the charity as possible. Some walkers came from as far as the Isle of Wight to attend the walk and help raise money for the charity.
Besides the actual sponsored walk, there was also a cake sale. In fact so many cakes were produced that additional tables had to be provided to display all the cakes! These proved to be very popular with the groups of people attending…(nothing like boosting your sugar levels after a bit of exercise…just don’t mention it to the rehab guys…)

The event has proved to be extremely successful in many ways. It has raised awareness of stroke in the local community, established links with stroke survivors and of course has raised funding for the group to continue to function for the foreseeable future. In total more than £1100 has been raised! An amount that has completely exceeded any expectations.

Information about the charity
Stroke Survivors Southampton (SSS) hosts regular meetings every two weeks on a Thursday at Sembal House, Southampton. For complete details please contact the group leaders via email or telephone.
The aim of the meeting is for the group leaders to provide an update on the various activities of the group and for members to discuss any issues they may have.
Issues tend to be around rehabilitation, support services, help required, outings, and any other problems. There are no real limitations to what can be discussed at the meetings.
The other services we aim to provide are:
 Seated exercise
 Physiotherapy
 Outings
 Hydro physiotherapy
 Advice on household aids

What an amazing summer of sport we have had, and how wonderful that the whole nation got behind team GB in such a big way. The Olympics really were fantastic and now the Paralympics have started and the nation can continue with the Olympic fever that seems to have swept us all. At Therapeutics we were all hooked and had a television constantly on so staff and patients didn’t miss a moment.

Sponsored Walk

On Saturday August 4th we held a sponsored walk and cake sale for the charity Young Stroke Survivors Southampton and lots of our patients, rehab gym members and stroke survivors took part in the 4 lap course that was the equivalent of 1 mile. The day was a great success and the participants all completed the course with real determination. Well done to everyone that took part, so far over £850 has been raised which the charity will be able to put to really good use.

Yoga Classes

We are planning to start a new yoga class on Friday afternoons from 2pm-3pm. The class will include some breath work, gentle mat and standing postures and also time to relax at the end to traditional Indian music. Many studies conclude that Yoga helps improve sleep and reduce stress and anxiety…what a nice way to start the weekend, all relaxed. If you would be interested in joining the small class, suitable for all abilities please call reception on 02380 653707 to find out more details.

Therapeutics Gym

If the recent Olympics has inspired you to get off the sofa and get fit, remember Therapeutics has a gym where you can slowly and carefully change from couch potato to athlete!! With very reasonable monthly membership fees and free parking it could be just what you are looking for. Please feel free to come and have a look at the gym during our normal opening hours.

And Finally…..

With most staff now having had their summer holidays we are back to business as usual. So whatever you need from physiotherapy, sports massage, gait analysis, Pilates, personal training, podiatry, hypnotherapy or acupuncture (what a list!!) we are here to help.
